Jay Lake, an author and editor of science fiction, horror and fantasy, died in Portland Oregon yesterday, five days short of his 50th birthday. He made his diagnosis of colon cancer public in 2008, and sadly the disease metastasized into his lungs and liver.
Lake's book Into the Gardens of Sweet Night won him the John W. Campbell Award for best new science fiction writer in 2004 for , an award won in earlier years by Jerry Pournelle, C.J. Cherryh, Spider Robinson and Orson Scott Card, among others. (Notable runners up include George R.R. Martin, John Varley, Joan D. Vinge and Lois McMaster Bujold.) Among his series of books are Sunspin, Green, The City Imperishable and Mainspring. The SFWA wrote this tribute to Jay including an address where you can contribute to help with his medical bills.
Best wishes to the family and friends of Jay Lake, from a fan. He is never to be forgotten.
