3 May 2013

Birthday
Christina Hendricks b. 1975

Movies released
Spider-Man released 3 May 2002

While Ms. Hendricks' best known role is as Joan on Mad Men, genre fans may know her best from two appearances on the quickly cancelled cult classic Firefly. Many happy returns to Ms. Hendricks, of course.

In the year 2000!

Prediction: Advance sentinel will scout from the air in baskets held aloft by a small rotor blade mounted above the craft.

Predictor: French postcards from 1900

Reality: Let's remember that this is before the Wright Brothers get airborne in 1903, so the artist can be forgiven for underestimating the size of the rotor blade necessary to achieve enough upward thrust to fly.

I often mock the French. I am an American and it is an important part of our cultural heritage. But if John Elfreth Watkins described this in one of his predictions, I'd likely give him full points, so it's only fair to give credit where credit is due. Even to the French.

Looking one day ahead... INTO THE FUTURE!

Many of the predictions from the early 1900s take an optimistic view of what's to come, but tomorrow we will meet a dark futurist whose 1907 book about the future foresaw a brutal class war. His name is Jack London.

Join us then... IN THE FUTURE!
