 Birthdays

James Doohan b. 1920 died 7/20/05

Prediction: March 1975: Biological warfare between the USSR and the People’s Republic of China starts a plague killing most of the world’s population.

Predictor:  The Omega Man (1971)

Reality: The interesting twist on this end of the world scenario is that the good old USA is NOT involved in the final conflict, which is instead set off by the damned soulless evil commies fighting one another.

The story is an adaptation of I Am Legend, the 1954 novel by Richard Matheson that has been the source material for several films throughout the years. The book is sometimes referred to as "the first modern vampire novel" and also influenced many people writing zombie apocalypses. The earlier film adaptation The Last Man on Earth (1964) clearly influenced Night of the Living Dead (1968) and several plot devices are found in the modern British zombie films 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later.

  1. I'd give it half a point. Although not the result of biological warfare, teh eruption of th AIDS virus is pretty much right in that timeframe, and I would say it qualifies as a plague; although modern health organizations managed to keep it from being as widespread as historical plagues.

Makes people look pretty much like the zombies in the Omega Man, also.
