Notes from the birthday list.
1. The Picture Slot. In both 2013 and 2014, Benedict Cumberbatch was in the Picture Slot. While I still think he is in the sweet spot of his career, I instead went with a picture of Supernatural star Jared Padalecki. Mr. Padalecki has decided to talk about his battle with depression and the fan reaction, especially at Comic-Con this year, was very heartening. It's a positive thing that people are talking more about mental illness, so good on ya, Mr. Padalecki.

2. Spot the Canadian! Padalecki stars in a Canuck genre TV show, but he was born on this side of the border. The Canuck is Chiara Zanni, who has the almost always telling trifecta of Supernatural, Smallville and Stargate.

3. Nepotism and not. Nancy Carrell and Bodhi Elfman are not as well known as their respective spouses Steve and Jenna, but they have careers of their own and I don't count that as nepotism. The late Tim McIntire was son of the character actor John McIntire, so I would count that.

4. Does she count? Last year, an obit said the last living female Munchkin from The Wizard of Oz was gone. A little known fact is that several Munchkins were kids and not little people, so the "official" Munchkins are the members of the Singer Midget troupe. Priscilla Montgomery was one of the kids and she is still with us. (Betty Ann Bruno, a now retired reporter for KTVU in Oakland, is also an uncounted Munchkin.) Happy birthday to Miss Montgomery. Without her on the list, the Guy at the Door would have been 70 year old George Dzundza, which is way too young for that "honor" in my book.

Many happy returns to all the living on the list and to the dead, thanks for all the memories.

Predictor: Robert A. Heinlein in the 1957 book The Door Into Summer

Prediction: A lot of little things from 2000 I missed going back to 1970, I had to go back to shaving! I once even caught a cold.

Reality: In this story, the hero goes into suspended animation to get from 1970 to 2000, then time travel to get back. So the end of shaving and the end of the common cold in the 20th Century. That's 0 for 2 for Bob this week.

Never to be Forgotten: Alex Rocco 1936-2015

Veteran character actor Alex Rocco, pictured here in probably his most iconic role as Moe Greene from The Godfather, has died at the age of 79. His biography mentions that he worked hard to get rid of his thick Boston accent, working with well known genre actors Leonard Nimoy and Jeff Corey. While he played gangsters in a lot of his roles, his genre performances include Sabrina, the Teenage Witch, Small & Frye, The Entity, Slither and Batman.

Best wishes to the family and friends of Alex Rocco, from a fan. He is never to be forgotten.

Never to be Forgotten: Alan Kupperberg 1953-2015

Mark Evanier's webpage reports the death of comic book artist (and sometimes writer and letterer) Alan Kupperberg at the age of 62.  As I get older, my definition of "much too young" changes, but younger than my oldest brother has always been much too young in my book.

Kupperberg spent most of his career as a fill-in artist at Marvel, though he worked at other companies as well. The picture included here is the cover of the one-shot Obnoxio the Clown vs. The X-Men, a book where Kupperberg did everything, writing, doing the art and the lettering. That's a rare thing in the comic book industry, though cartoonists do it all the time.

Best wishes to the family and friends of Alan Kupperberg, from a fan. He is never to be forgotten.

Hume Cronyn b. 1911 died 15 June 2003 (Cocoon, *batteries not included)

Notes from the birthday list.
1. The Picture Slot. The previous Picture Slotters, astronaut John Glenn and visual futurist Syd Mead, are both clearly iconic and both are still with us, bless them. This year, I decided to go for a reference from the 21st Century. I thought about Jed Whedon from Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, Michael Huisman from Game of Thrones and Kirsten Bell from Heroes, but instead I went with Vin Diesel as Riddick.

2.  A Canadian amongst us. There's no way of telling Hume Cronyn is Canadian from his credits, but what good American family would name a boy Hume?

Ya cain't trusts 'em, I tell ya.

3. Nepotism FTW.  Ken Houghton points out what I failed to mention when I first posted this, that Jed Whedon definitely gets some nepotism points beingthe younger brother of Joss Whedon.

Many happy returns to all the living on the list and to the dead, thanks for all the memories.

Movies released
The Dark Knight released, 2008

Predictor: Morris L. Ernst in the 1955 book Utopia 1976

Prediction: The plastic domed house with glass walls and plastic panels, plastic floors with ducts for air conditioning, and curtains of light between rooms is on the drawing boards for 1964.

Reality: And the drawing board is pretty much where it stayed. While not made of plastic, Eichler Homes made a big splash in California in the 1960s. They looked great, but no one thought about what a bitch it would be to clean that much glass and the tremendous amount of heat loss.

Just a couple firing neurons away from a really good idea.

Tim Rose b. 1956 (Wizards vs. Aliens, Prince Caspian and the Voyage of the Dawn Treader [TV], Howard the Duck, Return to Oz, Return of the Jedi, The Dark Crystal)
Margot Rose b. 1956 (Hollow Man, Deep Space Nine, Lois & Clark, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Freddy’s Nightmares)
J. Michael Straczynski b. 1954 (writer, Sense8, World War Z, Thor, Babylon 5, Jeremiah, The Twilight Zone [1980s], Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future, She-Ra, He-Man)
David Hasselhoff b. 1952 (Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No!, Anaconda III, Knight Rider, Click, 3rd Rock from the Sun, NightMan, Starcrash)

Notes from the birthday list.
1. The Picture Slot. In previous years, the Picture Slot went to Donald Sutherland, kind of a hybrid movie star/character actor and Tim Rose, the poor baster who was stuck in teh Howard the Duck suit. I think the best known name not yet used is David Hasselhoff, but seriously, I just couldn't. So instead we have J. Michael Straczynski, who is currently tweeting about his new series Sense8, which he made with teh Wachowskis and is available on Netflix.

2. Spot the Canadians. It's not a tough bit of trivia to know Donald Sutherland was born in Canada. You might be able to spot Jessica Amlee by her credit list, but writer Cory Doctorow and young actor Austin Macdonald are doing their best to blend in.

3. Tempus fugit and the horse you rode in on. The other guy from Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure turns 50 today. I don't remember whether he was Bill or Ted and I would like not being reminded, thank you very much. When I see a milestone like this, I get one of those "Jesus! How old am I then?" moments. I mean, I know how old I am, but just makes it sink in a little deeper.

4. MST3K. Two episodes of Space:1999 were turned into Cosmic Princess and mercilessly mocked by Joel and the bots.

Many happy returns to all the living on the list and to the... wait a tick! Everyone's alive! Yay!

Predictor: H.G. Wells in his 1901 book Anticipations

Prediction: If deterrent punishments are used at all in the code of the future, the deterrent will neither be death, nor mutilation of the body, nor mutilation of the life by imprisonment, nor any horrible things like that, but good scientifically caused pain, that will leave nothing but a memory.

Reality:I can't read this without thinking of the dialog.

"The booth for this one, Captain?"

"Yes... the booth."

And, oh yeah, the young H.G. Wells was not the lovable, wide eyed fellow played by Malcolm McDowell in Time After Time. Not to put too fine a point on it, he was an asshole.

Never to be Forgotten: "Diamond" Dave Somerville 1931-2015 I'm old enough to have been on newsgroups back when the Internet was all text. One of my favorite newsgroups,  alt.obituaries, still has a presence on Facebook. Ray Arthur, one of the regulars, pointed me in the direction of the passing of Dave Somerville, the original lead singer with The Diamonds, whose big hit was Little Darling. Besides that claim to fame, Somerville took acting classes and one of this fellow students was Leonard Nimoy. Somerville appeared on the Star Trek episode The Conscience of the King and was also on the 1970s TV show The Amazing Spier-Man, back when special effects barely deserved the description "special".

Best wishes to the family and friends of "Diamond" Dave Somerville, from a fan. He is never to be forgotten.

Sonny Tufts b. 1911 died 4 June 1970 (Cat-Women of the Moon)
Mary Philbin b. 1902 died 7 May 1993 (The Phantom of the Opera [1925])

Notes from the birthday list.
1. The Picture Slot. Will Ferrell is the big star on the list, but he is not iconic in genre, so the Picture Slot has gone in previous years to Jerry Doyle from Babylon 5 and to Pheobe Cates from Drop Dead Fred. This year it goes to the late Richard LeParmentier as the choked General Motti from Star Wars. My favorite meme from this picture is Peter Cushing getting a thought bubble reading "Drama queen!"

2. Spot the Canadian! Yet again, I think the hint that there is only one makes our Canadian spottable my the well-informed public, which certainly describes my loyal readers.

3. Hey, no Star Trek! it is somehow fitting that a shot from a Star Wars film (who are we kidding? THE Star Wars film) is in the Picture Slot on a day when Star Trek has zero love.

Many happy returns to all the living on the list and to the dead, thanks for all the memories.

Movies released
Inception released, 2010
I, Robot released, 2004

Predictor: Andrew Carnegie in 1900, quoted in The Experts Speak

Prediction: To kill a man will be considered as disgusting in the Twentieth Century as we in this day consider it disgusting to eat one.

Reality: In his day, Andrew Carnegie was probably in the top 1% of the top 1% of the top 1%, which is to say one in a million when it comes to being crazy rich, but this is a noble sentiment, even if it is flat out wrong.

Never to be Forgotten: Aubrey Morris 1926-2015 Veteran British character actor Aubrey Morris, shown here in a publicity still from The Prisoner, had died at the age of 89. I have to admit that when an actor plays a very ill person like Morris did in Deadwood last decade, my brain decides he is gone, which wasn't true until today. Besides The Prisoner, Aubrey appeared in genre productions including Mermaid Chronicles Part 1: She Creature, The Others, Legend of the Mummy, Bordello of Blood, Babylon 5, Alien Nation, Beauty and the Beast, Lifeforce, The Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy [TV], Space: 1999, A Clockwork Orange and Blood from the Mummy’s Tomb.

Best wishes to the family and friends of Aubrey Morris, from a fan. He is never to be forgotten.

Ken Lynch b. 1910 died 13 February 1990 (Battlestar Galactica, Kolchak: The Night Stalker, The Invaders, Star Trek, The Munsters, Twilight Zone, I Married a Monster from Outer Space)

Notes from the birthday list.
1. The Picture Slot. Today's list is dominated by Oh That Guy actors. Terry O'Quinn became sort of a household name after Lost, and he had the Picture Slot once, as did Ken Lynch, who was never a household name. The person who was almost a movie star if you squint real hard is Brigitte Neilsen, and while she is allegedly physically my type, she fills me with inertia, so no Picture Slot for her. Instead it's Oh That Guy Joe Turkel as the bartender from The Shining. He is the oldest living person on the list but since someone younger than he is died already, he doesn't count as The Guy at the Door.

2. Living Canadian free. I found no Canadian actors in my searches today.

3. MST3K. Our Picture Slot pal Joe Turkel was in Village of the Giants. I was planning to use a picture from that movie for him, but he wasn't considered important enough for a publicity still.

Many happy returns to all the living on the list and to the dead, thanks for all the memories.

Movies released
Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince released, 2009
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 released, 2011

Predictor: George Sutherland in his book Twentieth Century Inventions

Prediction: During the twentieth century the proportion of the fruit eaters among the peoples of the great manufacturing countries will be very largely augmented, and this result will be brought about mainly through the instrumentality of methods of keeping perishable produce free from deterioration by maintaining it almost at the freezing point…

Reality: Longtime readers with keen memories will recall how much fruit consumption meant to Sutherland's American contemporary and my personal man crush John Elfreth Watkins. In this case, great minds are heading down the same path.

Notes from the birthday list.
1. The Picture Slot. In previous years, I had Jackie Earle Haley from Watchmen and Harry Dean Stanton from Alien. Barring repeats from those gentlemen, the choices come down to Oh That Guys, writers and one TV star, Matthew Fox from Lost. I have to say with some pride that I gave up on Lost  rather early on because I was completely convinced they were just making shit up as they went along, and judging from the general hate for the last episode, I'm going to do the unethical and give myself a grade of Absolutely Fucking Correct.

Let me also say that Mr. Fox is not to blame for suck-ass writing.

2. Spot the Canadian! If I tell you that there is just one Canadian, I think this is enough info for the readers to do the spotting. Knock yourselves out.

3. Nepotism not so much. Like with Steve McQueen's grandson, I'm going to say that being Errol Flynn's grandson has not made that much of a difference in Sean Flynn's career.

Many happy returns to all the living on the list and to the dead, thanks for all the memories.

Predictor: John Langdon-Davies in his 1936 book A Short History of the Future

Prediction: By 1975, parents will have ceased to bring up their children in family units.

Reality: Looking up his personal life, I find references to him getting married in 1918 and losing a scholarship because of it, but not to any children or a divorce. I thought this might be the prediction of a lifelong bachelor, but I'll have to find another reason for him being this dense about how much people love their kids.

Looking one day ahead... INTO THE FUTURE!

For me, Wednesday is that calm break in the week for our sensible friend from the Victorian era, George Sutherland.

Join us then... IN THE FUTURE!

Notes from the birthday list.
1. The Picture Slot(s). July 13th is one of those fairly easy decisions. You can argue for someone other than Sir Patrick Stewart or Harrison Ford, but I'm not listening. This year, I put them both up. These guys not only represent the two pillars of modern on-screen sci-fi, Star Trek and Star Wars, but they also have other iconic genre roles and successful careers even if you don't count their genre stuff. Nobody else here comes close.

2. Spot the Canadians! Usually, the Supernatural/Smallville daily double tells us we've got Canadians, but today it's the Orphan Black/Lost Girl pairing. Michael Mando and Rosemary Dunsmore are our pals from north of the border.

3. The Guys at the Door. The oldest living guys on the list just turned 75, the aforementioned Sir Patrick Stewart and the hard working David Westburg. While that is way too young to be The Guys at the Door, that's how this randomness works sometimes.

4. Nepotism more of less. Steven R. McQueen is the grandson of Coolest Person Ever Steve McQueen, but he was born eight years after his grand-dad died, so I don't know if it should count as nepotism.

Many happy returns to all the living on the list, especially Sir Patrick Stewart and David Westburg, and to the dead, thanks for all the memories.

Predictor: The OMNI Future Almanac, published in 1982.

Prediction: The most visible educational development of the 1980s will be the widespread introduction of automated teaching devices that marry the medium of the videodisc to the microcomputer. Such systems will permit massive amounts of audio-visual information to be introduced to students at their own rate of learning.

Reality: Picking the laserdisc as the way of the future in 1982 is just as obvious as can be and dead fucking wrong at the same time. If I'm being generous, it's not unlike people thinking the pneumatic tube would be ubiquitous or our sensible friend George Sutherland thinking the internal combustion engine had too many drawbacks to ever be fixed.

But I'm not being generous. I love pneumatic tubes and George Sutherland's mistake are always forgiven, while laserdiscs in particular are complete junk in my book and I have bad memories of Philips deciding (briefly) they were going to enforce the patents they held on the CD-ROM. I'm glad the Internet swept that nonsense away, most especially Philips' blackmail threat.

Looking on day ahead... INTO THE FUTURE!

How are you fixed for Commie predictions? Well, even if you are topped off, we get another one tomorrow from John Langdon-Davies, Commie!
