Notes from the birthday list.
1. The Picture Slot. In previous years, the Picture Slot belonged to our two movie stars, Salma Hayek and Keanu Reeves. With them out of the running, my vote for most iconic is the late Meinhardt Raabe as the Munchkin coroner.

2. The Guy at the Door. On today's list, comic actor Chuck McCann is the oldest living person and everyone younger is still with us. Special birthday wishes to him.

3. Living Canadian free! No Canadians to spot today.

Many happy returns to all the living on the list, especially Chuck McCann, and to the dead, thanks for all the memories.

Predictors: Michael Mann, Michael Kozar and Sonya Miller

Prediction: The 2015 Atlantic hurricane season will have between 5 to 10 named storms, with eight the most likely number.

Reality: We are halfway into the season and the sixth storm just got named. The only thing that can go wrong here is undershooting the mark, which is not impossible.

Notes from the birthday list.
1. The Picture Slot. A shorter list than usual today and none of our usual extra comment events apply. We have no Canadians, no nepotism, no movies from MST3K, no one whose death hasn't registered in my unreliable brain. (Matthew McGrory was very tall at 7'6" and died young as the very tall sometimes do, but when I see his name I know he's gone.) Earlier Picture Slot winners were the lovely Nikki Reed from Twilight and the hunky Peter Hinwood from Rocky Horror. Not wanting to repeat earlier winners, the choice came down to the two best known names, Bill Paxton and Dennis Hopper, and I chose a picture of Hopper from Waterworld. I am of the opinion that Waterworld, which had its problems in production, is actually watchable and is unfairly lumped in with the famous messes like Heaven's Gate and Ishtar. Then again, I didn't hate John Carter, so these opinions may have something to do with the aforementioned unreliable brain.

Many happy returns to all the living on the list and to the dead, thanks for all the memories.

Predictors: Michael Mann, Michael Kozar and Sonya Miller

Prediction: The number of named storms in this year's Atlantic hurricane season (1 June to 1 December) will be be 7.5 +/- 2.7, which is to say 5 to 10 with 8 the most likely.

Reality: In 2013 and 2014, Mann, Kozar and Miller got the correct number within their margin of error. Last year, their best guess was 9 and the actual number was 8. in 2013, they guessed 16 when there were 14 named storms. Their predictions over the past decade have been fairly accurate, except in 2012 when they predicted 11 named storms and there were actually 19.  The blog will check back in early December to see how the prediction panned out.

Cyril Ritchard b. 1897 died 18 December 1977 (The Dangerous Christmas of Red Riding Hood, Mr. Scrooge, Peter Pan)

Notes on the birthday list.
1. The Picture Slot. Last year it was Malachi Throne from the original Star Trek series. This year was tricky. There are several actors who are household names on the list, but iconic in genre is a little more problematic. Reviewing it now after I've made my decision, Woody Allen dressed up as the robot in Sleeper is iconic and he might well be in the slot in 2015, but this year I went with the cover from the award winning book Among Others.

2. Spot the Canadian! There is just one and as is typical, born after 1970 with multiple telltale shows on his resume. Answer later in the day.

Many happy returns to all the living on the list and to the dead, thanks for all the memories.

 Predictor: Mann, Kozar and Miller

Prediction: The 2014 Atlantic hurricane season will have 9 named storms, with a margin of error of +/-3.

Reality: November 30 is gone and there were 8 named storms, well within the margin of error. Last year, the prediction was 16 +/- 4 and the actual number was 13. This means they have gotten two years in a row correct, but this one was closer than last year. Nice work.

This month's splash photo

The FX-Atmos was a concept car from Ford in 1954. I love the bubble top roof and the headlight adornments that are somewhere between missile casings and hypodermic needles. This is not the first car with tailfins, Wikipedia gives that distinction to the Cadillac Eldorado of the late 1940s, but these were much more pronounced than any production in 1954.

I do love these car designs. Using actual science like aerodynamics, these things weren't as efficient as production cars today, but they made a real effort to make the separate brands distinctive.

Merritt Butrick b. 1959 died 17 March 1989 (Fright Night Part 2, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Beauty and the Beast, Why on Earth?, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, Zapped!, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan)

Jean-Pierre Jeunet b. 1953 (director, Alien: Resurrection, The City of Lost Children)
Lou Richards b. 1951 (Growth, Charmed, Hulk, The X Files, Project U.F.O., Logan’s Run [TV])
Valerie Perrine b. 1942 (Faerie Tale Theatre, Superman, Slaughterhouse Five)
Pauline Collins b. 1940 (Doctor Who, Merlin)
Nora Denney b. 1927 died 20 November 2005 (Splash, Tucker’s Witch, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, Bewitched, My Favorite Martian)
Anne Jackson b. 1926 (The Shining)
Terry Wilson b. 1923 died 30 March 1999 (Escape to Witch Mountain, Westworld)
Pat O’Malley b. 1890 died 21 May 1966 (Twilight Zone, Invasion of the Body Snatchers)

Last year, I went Whedonverse nerd and but up a picture of Clare Cramer as Glory, the Big Bad on season 5 of Buffy. This year, I'm going with Merritt Butrick, who played Kirk's illegitimate son David in Star Trek II and III. While not the most iconic role on the list, I call personal privilege here because my younger sisters went to high school with him in Mill Valley back in the day. While Charlie Sheen is the best known name here, he doesn't have an iconic genre role. The best bets for next year's Picture Slot are Nora Denney (a.k.a. Dodo Denney) as Mrs. Teevee from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Valerie Perrine as Miss Tessmacher from Superman or one of the many eerie stills from Jean-Pierre Jeunet's City of Lost Children.

Clarification: Pat O'Malley is NOT J. Pat O'Malley, two completely different Oh That Guys and J. Pat the better known. Still, Pat O'Malley had three roles on Twilight Zone, so he's definitely on the list. The guy has over 400 credits on imdb.com, stretching back to the silent era.

Many happy returns to all the living on the list and to the dead, thanks for all the memories.

Predictor: Mann, Kozar and Miller

Prediction: The 2014 Atlantic Hurricane season will have nine named storms, with a margin of error of plus or minus three.

Reality: This prediction says this would be a quiet season and for the first three months, the prediction is doing well. Only four named storms so far and very little landfall, even in the Caribbean islands. (Landfall is not part of the prediction.) We will visit this prediction again on December 1 when the season is officially over.

Looking one day ahead... INTO THE FUTURE!

We interrupt the regular schedule for a prediction from the Fourth Doctor.

18 May 2014

Birthdays
Spencer Breslin b. 1992 (The Happening, Zoom, Wonderfalls)
Tabrett Bethell b. 1982 (Legend of the Seeker)
Matt Long b. 1980 (Ghost Rider)
Cynthia Preston b. 1968 (Lost Girl, Carrie [2013], Haven, Andromeda, Relic Hunter, Total Recall 2070, The X-Files)
Nathaniel Parker b. 1962 (Merlin, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, Stardust)
Chow Yun-Fat b. 1955 (Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End)
Hugh Keays-Byrne b. 1947 (Mad Max: Fury Road, Farscape, Journey to the Center of the Earth, Badlands 2005, Mad Max)
Andreas Katsulas b. 1946 died 2 February 2006 (Star Trek: Enterprise, Babylon 5, Millennium, Star Trek: The Next Generation, The Death of the Incredible Hulk, Alien Nation [TV], Communion, Max Headroom)
Fred Saberhagen b. 1930 died 29 June 2007 (author, Berserker series, Earth’s End)
Liam Sullivan b. 1923 died 19 April 1998 (Misfits of Science, Logan’s Run [TV], Star Trek, Lost in Space, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Twilight Zone, The Magic Sword)

A short list today. Last year I gave the Picture Slot to Andreas Katsulas as G'Kar from Babylon 5, one of the many regulars on that show who died young. The one actual movie star here is Chow Yun-Fat, and there may be some of his Chinese films that count as genre, but I am only including the Pirates movie from his C.V. Another fair choice for the Picture Slot would be Liam Sullivan from his role on Plato's Stepchildren, but as I often do, I go with the tried and true Pretty Girl = Picture Slot formula and used Tabrett Bethell as Cara from Legend of the Seeker. Sometimes I think the producers of sci-fi and fantasy think the fan base is extremely shallow and only want to see beautiful women in ridiculously tight outfits.

And sometimes, I think the producers may be right.

Many happy returns of the day to all the living on the list and to the dead, thanks for all the memories.

Movies released
Shrek the Third released, 2007
Battleship released, 2012

Predictors: Michael Mann, Michael Kozar and Sonya Miller

Prediction: The 2014 Atlantic hurricane system will have fewer than normal named storms, somewhere between six and twelve, with nine most likely.

Reality: Last year, Mann and his team predicted between 12 and 20 storms and the actual number was 13. They count named storms, which means the wind speeds have to get up to at least tropical storm at some time in their existence. They make no predictions about how many will make landfall, a much trickier proposition.

2 December 2013

 Birthdays
Alfred Enoch b. 1988 (Harry Potter)
Frank Cho b. 1971 (artist, Avengers, Hulk)
Lucy Liu b. 1968 (Ballistic: Ecks vs, Sever, The X-Files, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys)
Rena Sofer b. 1968 (Once Upon a Time, Heroes, The Chronicle)
Dan Gauthier b. 1963 (Star Trek: The Next Generation, Lost, Supernatural)
Dennis Christopher b. 1955 (Angel, Star Trek: Enterprise, SeaQuest 2032, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine)
Keith Szarabajka b. 1952 (Angel, The Dark Knight, Star Trek: Enterprise, The X-Files, Babylon 5)
T.C. Boyle b. 1948 (author, Friend of the Earth)
Arch Hall, Jr. b 1943 (Eegah)
Cathy Lee Crosby b. 1944 (Wonder Woman)
Jimmy Sangster b. 1927 died 19 August 2011 (writer, The Crawling Eye, Horror of Dracula, Brides of Dracula, The Mummy, X: The Unknown)
Jack Davis b. 1925 (artist, MAD magazine, Tales From the Crypt)
Jonathan Frid b. 1924 died 13 April 2012 (Dark Shadows)
Ray Walston b. 1914 died 1 January 2001 (My Favorite Martian, Star Trek: The Next Generation, The Stand, Galaxy of Terror)
Jerry Sohl b. 1913 died 4 November 2002 (writer, Star Trek, Twilight Zone)
Frank Reicher b. 1875 died 19 January 1965 (King Kong, Son of Kong, Superman and the Mole-Men)

Long list of writers and actors today. Lucy Liu gets the Picture Slot, but I will admit she hasn't done that much stuff in genre. Jonathan Frid as Barnabas Collins or Ray Walston as Uncle Martin are more iconic, but Lucy Liu is prettier, so there she is.

A couple of names worth explaining. Cathy Lee Crosby was the star of the first version of Wonder Woman on TV, but it didn't work. Wonder Woman should be a blue eyed brunette, and if she's va-va-voom, so much the better. Frank Reicher played Captain Englehorn in both the Kong movies.

Many happy returns to all the living on the list, and to those who are no longer with us, thanks for all the memories.

Prediction: There will be between 12 and 20 hurricanes in the Atlantic in the 2013 hurricane season, which ended 30 November

Predictors: Michael E. Mann, Michael Kozar and Sonya Miller

Reality: There were 13, but none very strong and very few making landfall. Even so, the number is in the confidence interval, so points to Mann, Kozar and Miller

5 September 2013

Birthdays
Skandar Keynes b. 1991 (Narnia)
Carice Van Houten b. 1976 (Game of Thrones, Repo Men)
Paddy Considine b. 1974 (The World’s End)
Rose MacGowan b. 1973 (Charmed, Grindhouse)
Michael Keaton b. 1951 (Batman, Beetlejuice)
William Devane b. 1939 (The X-Files, Stargate SG-1, The Dark Knight Rises)

An all-actor list today and I put pretty Ms. Van Houten in the Picture Slot for the usual reasons. Being old, I can remember when fandom got their panties in a bunch because Michael Keaton was cast as Batman, and that worked out pretty well.

Many happy returns of the day to all concerned.

Prediction:September 2012: Army doctor Lt. Colonel Robert Neville is the last healthy human in New York City immune to a virus turning humans into vampires.

Predictor: I Am Legend, released 12/14/2007

Reality: Fans of sci-fi will know that I Am Legend and the 1970s movie The Omega Man were both based on Richard Matheson's novel I Am Legend. Both movies give dates five or six years after the movie is released for the time frame of when the crap hits the fan. And since this paragraph is entitled "reality", it should be noted have avoided the zombie/vampire/gun-nut/Mayan apocalypses so far.

Atlantic Hurricane Season prediction update

This has been a quiet storm season so far. September 1 is the midway point and there have been only seven named storms so far, none of them reaching hurricane level. The current storm - titled Tropical Depression Seven in the illustration - has now become Tropical Storm Gabrielle and made landfall in Puerto Rico in the past few hours. As it goes back over the water, it is predicted to become the first hurricane of the season, which will set a record for the latest first hurricane. The track is currently moving away from the mainland of North America, but Bermuda may get hit early next week. Best wishes to everyone in the path.

As a reminder, the prediction was for 12 to 20 named storms this season, with 16 being the most likely. If the last three months are the same as the first three, the total will be 12. The Next update will be December 1.

Looking one day ahead... INTO THE FUTURE!

Yet again the end of the world is predicted, this time for September 1994, though the predictor can hardly be said to be in the genre.

11 May 2013

Birthday
Tim Blake Nelson b. 1964

Mr. Nelson was in Minority Report and The Incredible Hulk, so he deserves a mention on a sci-fi blog, but honestly, his role in O Brother Where Art Thou is the best casting decision of the first century of talking pictures. He was so wonderful and then he said...

"In the Jailhouse Now fellas, neighborhood of A"

and now that performance belongs to the gods.

Prediction: The 2013 Atlantic Hurricane season (June 1 to November 30) will have between 12 and 20 named storms, with 16 being the most likely.

Predictors: Michael E. Mann, Michael Kozar and Sonya Miller

Reality: I promised a Jack London prediction yesterday in the coming attractions, but I found this more interesting, so the doom that awaits us in 1912 through 1932 will just have to wait a week.

This prediction can be tested on December 1 and I will be back to check in then. This is actual science, not science fiction, no matter what the people who say "global warming is a hoax" will try to tell you. I will get in touch with the predictors to see if they have a range for the number of hurricanes and major hurricanes (above 3.0) as well.

As a footnote to the predictions in the picture from last year, there were 19 named storms, 10 hurricanes and 2 of them major, so Dr. Gray undershot almost everything by about two thirds.

Looking one day ahead... INTO THE FUTURE!

We get the last of the predictions from 1988 about the exciting future that awaits... in 2013!
